How not to sell maternity swimwear

I started an aquanatal class recently. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would to be honest, met someone due almost the same time as me so that’s nice, and although it was all rather easy going at this point in my pregnancy, I’m sure it will do me good especially in the later months. My existing swimwear currently fits fine, and there’s a chance it might well see me right through as it was getting big on me pre-pregnancy, but a girl does love to shop and I started browsing the maternity swimwear sections on some websites (it’s hard to find handmade swimwear in the UK!).

I had read some blog posts a few weeks ago about clothing retailers not always using pregnant models and people being absolutely outraged by this and I thought, well, yeah, it would be nice if they did but they’re probably in quite short supply so as long as the clothes are shown clearly and they’ve made an effort to show how they would fall on a bump (real or not), then I’m not bothered. Well, up until that point I clearly had not seen how bad a clearly not pregnant model wearing a fake belly could make something look. Cue the maternity swimwear range from Asos:

See the straps for holding the belly in place?

I wasn’t outraged so much as just gobsmacked. These ladies are beautiful, and I don’t mean them any disrespect, but I’m pretty sure they aint pregnant. The strap shapes in the back of the swimwear where the fake belly is on kinda give it away…. but it’s not just that. This swimwear is for ladies who are finding curves where they have never had curves before. They will be filling those cups. The breast area of these swimsuits has been made to look like an ill fitting, badly made garment that will swamp, not celebrate, your curves. Shame on you Asos. If you couldn’t get a pregnant model then at least either get a size that fits the models boobs, or a model who has boobs that will fill the swimwear out. It looks awful. And as for the straps in the back, well, I’m sure someone could ‘airbrush’ that out ;p Lazy buggers. It’s certainly put me off anyway, I think I’ll carry on looking.
