Felted wool dreads tutorial

I’ve finally got round to putting together that dread making tutorial, click on the pic just to the left there for a look see! The steps may not be very easy to read on screen in my artsy fartsy way of doing it, so for those of you who would just like for me to give it to you straight, here goes:

1. Get yourself your wool roving (usually i get about 300g), a bucket of as-hot-as-you-can-stand-it water, and some high Ph soap (olive soap is good if you can get it)
2. Cut a length of roving DOUBLE what you want the lengths of your dreads to be (remember, they’re double ended dreads)
3. Split this piece of roving into pieces depending on how thick you want your dreads (it may need a little trial and error as it’s hard to know until you have felted up the wool)
4. Dunk ONE piece at a time into the hot, soapy water. Let it sit, grab yourself a cuppa.
5. Pulling a little bit out at a time, roll the wool between the palms of your hands, creating the shape required!
6. Once i have done the whole length, i like to put it back into the hot soapy water, and then take it out a piece at a time, rolling it on the towel to tidy it up.
7. Hang to dry!
8. Give yourself a pat on the back and get going with the rest!

Points to note

  • You may, when rolling, occasionally get a “line” in your dread. This is not good. Dunk, pull apart, and try again.
  • If the water is starting to cool, put in some more hot, careful not to burn your hands though!
  • If the water is too soapy you might find it difficult to get enough friction to actually roll the wool between your hands
  • Whatever you do, don’t use a Ph balanced soap
  • Try combining wool colours for transitional effects!

And for those of you who simply don’t have the time (this is quite a lengthy process), don’t fancy giving it a go, or simply can’t be bothered and just want your dreads NOW, then there is always me etsy shop! www.linziloop.etsy.com
